Giving Tree Project
(Bringing)
The Giving Tree project is a voluntary project, whose goal is to fill up and give gift bags to migrant children. Anyone can be a volunteer. The volunteers can pick up bags and go shopping for items that are on the list they're given. The lists tell the volunteer all the basic information about the kid that they are shopping for, such as shoe sizes, shirt sizes, age, height, weight, etc.
What did we do?
We volunteered to help with this project and picked up the Giving Tree bags from an official representative. The Giving Tree bags are hand-made by the residents of 'Home Sweet Home'. Many of these workers are disabled and it means a lot for them to be making these bags. The staff at 'Home Sweet Home' look beyond their disabilities as they're more than capable of doing this work; the end products are just as good as those made of people without disabilities. Surprisingly, they were the ones who first offered to make these bags for free, but the Community Center still paid them for their work.
After receiving the bags, we went to various shops, looking for the appropriate items we needed to purchase. Since there was a price limit of 200RMB (approx. 32 US Dollars), it was harder to buy warm winter coats for the little children. However, despite the difficulties, we managed to shop for and fill 13 bags in total. After buying winter coats, pants, shirts, sneakers, and other clothing, we still had enough leftover money to get some stationary for the kids. We managed to buy color pencils and a storybook for each bag.
Participating in the Giving Tree Project taught us a lot about managing expenses. Even though there were quite a few obstacles along our way, such as price limits, wrong clothing sizes and overpriced stores, we still managed to push through. We had a lot of fun and helped out a good cause at the same time; it was a win-win situation. We wrote our own personal notes to each kid and put them in the bag. Hopefully, it brought a smile to their faces as they read the words that truly came from the bottom of our hearts.
